Skoda Roomster 2012

  • Skoda Roomster, 2012

With the Škoda Fabia series, Škoda Auto has established a strong foundation for its five-car portfolio. The superminis family roots are evident throughout. From the bold, elegant lines of its exterior styling down to its smallest component, the Fabia exemplifies Škodas attention to detail through simple, clever solutions and innovation. And now, in spring 2010, the Škoda Fabia has been completely revised with a new face and an even greater emphasis on energy efficiency and comfort. The breadth of its technical innovations goes far beyond a mere facelift.

The Škoda Fabia Combi and Škoda Roomster also receive the bold new look inside and out as well as numerous technical changes under the skin. But while the looks might have changed, the characteristics of this multi-talented pair have not have not. With luggage capacity of 505 litres with its rear seats in place and 1485 litres with them flat, the Škoda Fabia Combi continues to provide the sort of boot space that exceeds what is normally offered in this class. Meanwhile the Škoda Roomster, with its extremely versatile VarioFlex rear seat system, continues to fulfil the requirements of families and active people alike. Its boot volume can be extended from a minimum of 480 litres to 1810 litres, making the Škoda Roomster a load-carrying champion.

The new Škoda Fabia RS also celebrates its premiere at the 2010 Geneva Motorshow and, for the first time, the sportiest Škoda Fabia is available as an estate. Its combination of a high performance 132 kW (180 bhp) engine and low fuel consumption of just 6.4 itres/100 km mark it out as a class leader.

With these variants of the Škoda Fabia series, Škoda Auto offers a model range in the small-car segment to meet almost every customer need.

The completely redesigned front end incorporates strong horizontal forms, which visually lower the Škoda Fabia despite its unchanged height. The Fabia now looks much more dynamic but does so without compromising any of its comfort. "With this redevelopment no component escaped our notice," outlines Development Executive Eckhard Scholz of the comprehensive redesign. The reason behind the redesign lies in the range of new, state-of-the-art and often turbo-charged engines, which debut in the Škoda Fabia, including a twin-charged unit. The comprehensive changes in the engine programme made it necessary to redevelop the Škoda Fabias front end and so the opportunity to reprofile its face was taken. The bumper and its mountings, the headlamp shapes, the bonnet and the front floor area - nothing is shared from the previous Škoda Fabia.

The new grille and the three-dimensionally shaped headlamps define the new look of the Škoda Fabia, their horizontal lines emphasising the front ends width.

Despite its redesign, the Škoda Fabias existing virtues havent been forgotten. The visor-like window surface which wraps around the passenger compartment has always been a key feature of the Škoda Fabia, and remains so. The option for a complementary roof paint have been kept.

Thanks to the new headlamps which stretch back into the front wings, its side profile appears lengthened, while the Škoda Fabias elegant rear lights feature Škodas trademark C-shaped graphic. All of these features ensure that the new Fabia continues to exemplify the brand.

New wheel trims and aluminium wheel designs, together with the new colour options of Rally Green, Aqua Blue and Pacific Blue, finish off the renewal of the smallest Škoda. The hatchback versions of the Škoda Fabia are now also available with roof rails for the first time. Lightweight construction and attention to detail keep their weight down to just two kilograms.

Inside, the passenger compartment is enhanced by new materials and visual inements. The chrome air vent inserts, gear lever frame and handbrake button convey the Škoda Fabias high quality. The new three- and four-spoke are now optionally leather-covered and with multi-function control of the audio and telephone systems. Attractive, breathable seat covers and upgraded Climatronic air conditioning controls give the new Škoda Fabia the feel of a car from a much higher class.

The drivers information display has also been redesigned, the central screen now featuring a gear-change indicator, which makes a significant contribution to higher fuel economy. On versions with DSG gearbox the selected gear is displayed, while the constant display of the outside temperature in the central screen is a significant safety feature. The function of the Tempomat and speed-limit warnings show the permitted top speed in countries with motorway speed limits and on vehicles with speed-restrictions due to winter tyres.

The previous monochrome, arrow-based graphics of the Škoda Fabias navigation system have now been replaced by the sophisticated Amundsen system from larger Škodas. It features a five-inch touchscreen, SD card reader and a connection point for external memory devices. An additional Mobile Device Interface (MDI) for use with the iPod, Aux-In, USB and Mini-USB units is also available and located in the lower glovebox. This replaces the previous CD changer.

The GSM phone preparation is also new. The system is able to maintain two different Bluetooth connections at the same time via audio streaming. This means you can phone via the hands-free device while listening to music from an additional external source. Both connections can be operated via the buttons on the optional multi-function leather steering wheel. Voice control is also activated via a button on the multi-function leather steering wheel or on the phone holster of the GSM II Comfort system.

The new Škoda Fabias enhanced engine range is at the heart of all the innovations. A total of seven petrol and three diesel engines are available. Power outputs range from 44 kW (60 bhp) to 132 kW (180 bhp) for the petrol engines, while the diesel units deliver between 55 kW (75 bhp) and 77 kW (105 bhp). All the engines meet EU5 exhaust emissions regulations, offer excellent fuel efficiency and, theore, extremely low CO2 emissions. All cars with manual gearboxes include a gear selection indicator to encourage fuel-efficient driving. An arrow on the dashboard insert screen suggests when to change gears in order to keep the engine in its most efficient rev range.

As elsewhere in the Škoda family, the engine range is determined by the art of downsizing. Drastically reduced engine capacities are supplemented by turbo-charging or double-charging and high precision direct fuel injection in order to achieve the optimal combination of performance as well as fuel efficiency. Turbo-charging significantly increases torque levels, particularly on petrol engines, while the pulling power is available from much lower revs than with conventional, naturally-aspirated engines. The top power unit of the Škoda Fabia series is the four-cylinder petrol engine in the Škoda Fabia RS. Despite its capacity of just 1.4-litres, double-charging via a turbocharger with wastegate and a mechanical, shiftable supercharger ensures that the power output is 132 kW (180 bhp) while peak torque is a similarly impressive 250 Nm from 2,000 rpm right through to 4,500rpm. Despite the muscular performance, combined consumption is just 6.4 l/100km while CO2 emissions are just 148 g/km.

But the performance wasnt the only development target. The environmental compatibility, smooth running and hence noise levels of the engines set new standards in the Škoda Fabia. When connected to the optimised seven-speed direct shift DSG - the new 1.2 TSI engine with 77 kW (105 bhp) offers outstandingly low running costs. Fuel consumption of just 5.3 litres petrol per 100 km (53.3 mpg) and CO2 emissions of only 124 g/km are exceptional for its performance level. The 1.2 TSI is offered in two performance levels - 63 kW (86 bhp) and 77 kW (105 bhp). Both are combined with a smooth manual five-speed gearbox as standard.

As well as engine improvements, the reduction of friction and the adoption of lightweight construction also increase efficiency. For the 1.2 litre three cylinder engines a new, weight-reduced crankshaft has been developed, which is 1.7 kg lighter than its predecessor. Resources are also saved in production: the casting is a whole kilogram lighter than before and there are fewer production residues.

The diesel engines offer a performance spectrum from 55 kW (75 bhp) to 77 kW (105 bhp), with capacities of 1.2- and 1.6-litres. All are equipped with a diesel particulate filter and high pressure injection via a common-rail system. With an injection pressure of up to 1,600 bar is achieved, and fast-response Piezo injectors which allow up to five injections per cycle, engine inement is noticeably improved and there is a drastic reduction of both fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. An additional cleaning of the exhaust gases is achieved by an oxidation catalyst and the exhaust gas recirculation in all diesel engine versions of the Škoda Fabia series.

A further development area was the reduction of the noise level of the two 1.2 HTP three-cylinder petrol engines. Instead of the normal sleeve-type camshaft chain, a toothed chain was chosen, whose three-part chain elements roll more smoothly and quietly on the gear wheels. This creates significantly reduced running noises, especially during the overrun operation of the three cylinder engines, mainly at higher revs, which were previously perceived as unpleasant. Sound levels through the most commonly used rev range, between 1,600 and 3,400 rpm are also clearly reduced.

The engines range of the new Škoda Fabia:

    * 1.2 HTP/44 kW (60 bhp) - EU 5 (not for the Roomster)
    * 1.2 12V HTP/51 kW (70 bhp) - EU 5/EU2
    * 1.4 16V/63 kW (86 bhp) - EU 5
    * 1.2 TSI/63 kW (86 bhp) - EU 5
    * 1.2 TSI/77 kW (105 bhp) - EU 5
    * 1.6 16V/77 kW (105 bhp) - EU 4/EU 2
    * 1.6 16V/77 kW (105 bhp)(A) - EU 4/EU 2
    * 1.4 TSI/132 kW (180 bhp) - EU 5 for RS
    * 1.2 TDI CR DPF/55 kW (75 bhp) - EU 5/EU 4
    * 1.6 TDI CR DPF/66 kW (90 bhp) - EU 5
    * 1.6 TDI CR DPF/77 kW (105 bhp) - EU 5

A series of safety systems ensure the security all the Škoda Fabias passengers and also of other road users. Four airbags protect the occupants in every Škoda Fabia, while a further two are as options available. ABS with brake assistant is also a standard fitment and, in many markets, ESP, which now includes tyre pressure warning or hill assistant, is also fitted.

The new headlamp system has been designed to offer dazzle-free and wide illumination whether lector or projector units are fitted. An energy-efficient daytime running light system is integrated into the new double-chamber fog lamps, roughly halving their energy consumption. This technology also allows a better illumination of the road in fog.

In emergency braking situations - 7 m/s2 at more than 60 km/h - the brake lights or hazard warning lights flash at a frequency of 3 Hz to warn the following traffic. If, after the emergency braking, the speed is under 10 km/h and the deceleration is under 2.5 m/s2, the hazard warning lights come on with their normal cycle (1.25 Hz) to alert the following drivers.

To increase security, the Škoda Fabias the windows can be controlled via the keys remote control. This can be used to close the windows when leaving the car or open the window from a distance to cool the interior if it is parked in direct sunlight.

In any case, the anti-theft system in the new Fabia has become even more resilient. A new generation immobiliser protects the new Škoda Fabia more effectively against theft.

Mechanically, a bigger brake servo makes the new Škoda Fabia more responsive during braking thanks to the bigger cylinder. This allows a faster and, above all, more sensitive retardation.

Together with the finely-tuned running gear, independent four-wheel suspension - by McPherson struts and triangular wishbones and a rear torsion beam - as well as the excellent crash safety of the body, the Škoda Fabia offers a more comprehensive protection and comfort than ever before.

Cadillac SRX 2012 Competent But Not Inspiring

The Cadillac SRX 2012 is in the niche of luxury crossover and shares most of its structure with the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain. However, the size of the SRX is bigger and its weight is significantly higher than the other two mainly because of its more complete equipment, prestige brand requires. Since the overhaul occurred in 2010, the SRX takes the razor lines, which have become the visual signature of the brand. However, the effect is not as striking with the SRX with the CTS Coupe.

Developed based on the Theta platform, which serves utilities compact or intermediate size at General Motors, the Cadillac SRX 2012 is available traction, but with all-wheel drive, much better suited to our climate. The style is reminiscent of the interior of the body, and the dashboard is both well designed and well finished. Strangely, you feel a sensation a little clinical aboard Cadillac SRX 2012, a sensation similar to what one experiences in the dentist’s waiting room.

A safe road behavior Cadillac SRX 2012

On the road, the Cadillac SRX 2012 is quite pleasant to drive, but not the gallery to show off what’s dynamics. The direction is correct, assistance is dosed and vehicle reactions are always safe and predictable, especially in the case of all-wheel drive models, which not only improves traction on slippery surfaces, but can also transfer some of the torque to the outer rear wheel in order to improve the behavior of the vehicle during cornering.

In addition, the Cadillac SRX 2012 is almost as quiet as the Lexus, which is a feat notorious. In regards to the engine, the automatic transmission shifts gears rather slowly, improve the comfort of history, but it is possible to control in manual mode using the gearshift lever to make gear changes a little faster.

A new engine for Cadillac SRX 2012

In recent years, the Cadillac SRX 2012 has often changed engine, the latter two being a running 3.0-liter V6 with 265 horsepower whose power was pretty fair, considering the weight of the SRX. This had the effect of making certain maneuvers such as overtaking on roads more hazardous. A turbocharged V6 2.8 liter, 300 horsepower developed for the Saab brand was also on the agenda, but even if its power was adequate, the engine did not deliver torque linearly.

2012-Cadillac-SRX

Regarding the longer-term future of this model, rumors indicate that Cadillac is currently developing a hybrid version of “pluggable” Cadillac SRX 2012 for the 2013 model year, and this new version may receive an internal combustion engine with four or six cylinders coupled to an electric motor, powered by a battery pack. As it would be a plug-in hybrid, it would be possible to recharge the battery pack at night to enjoy the electric motor and reduce fuel consumption. Story to follow …

Overall, it is clear that the Cadillac SRX 2012 was designed to be measured Lexus RX, and it is a comfortable vehicle, competent and has a certain style. However, it is unfortunate that the weight ratio affects both the dynamic road behavior.

Subaru Impreza 5 door 2012

  •  Subaru Impreza 5-door, 2012

Subaru launched the all-new, fourth-generation 2012 Subaru Impreza model at the 2011 New York International Auto Show. Debuting bolder, more dynamic design and new engines, Subarus compact contender will also offer increased interior space, inement and handling agility.

New interior features, infotainment technology and higher grade interior materials promise a more rewarding driving and ownership experience for customers of the 2012 Impreza.

For the UK market, a new 1.6 litre Boxer engine will be teamed with a five-speed manual transmission or the second generation Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission). Every new Subaru Impreza is equipped as standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Subarus invaluable performance and safety enhancing system.

Built on a longer wheelbase but with shorter overhangs, the new Subaru Impreza provides a roomier interior in the same external footprint as the outgoing model. The new passenger cabin not only yields more room, but crucially a greater feeling of spaciousness and better visibility than before.

Bold Design Statement Also Enhances Functionality

The all new Subaru Impreza conveys a bolder, more confident design that emphasises its sporty roots and standard All-Wheel Drive system. In profile, the 2012 Impreza draws focus to its wheels with powerful arches, a theme that debuted on the 2010 Subaru Legacy.

From the front, the Subaru badge centres the new hexagonal grille, a keystone of all new Subaru designs. The new Impreza sports characteristic Subaru hawk-eye headlights and a range of new 15-inch wheel cover and 16- and 17-inch alloy wheel designs.

Numerous design elements combine to give the Subaru Impreza a sportier exterior stance while also offering the driver and passengers a more commanding view of the road. The windscreen is more raked than in the previous model, with the bottom of the A-pillar moved 7.9 inches forward. This allows for a front door opening that is nearly five inches longer for easier entry/exit, abetted by lower doorsills. Rear doors are also larger on both 4 and 5-door body styles.

Driver visibility has been greatly improved through the use of thinner A-pillars and partitioned front door side glass. Where the door trim meets the window has also been lowered, helping visibility further. The instrument panel is lower and flatter than the outgoing model to give a wider field of view and a feeling of greater spaciousness. New exterior wing mirrors have greater surface area to enhance visibility while relocating them from the A-pillars to the doors contributes to improved sight lines.

Improved Room and Refinement
The new Subaru Imprezas wheelbase grows to 104.1 inches (compared to 103.2 in the outgoing model), while length and width measurements remain the same.

The combination of a longer wheelbase with re-designed interior trim and front seats has led to gains in passenger and cargo room. Rear seat passengers gain nearly two inches of legroom, thanks to both the longer wheelbase and a new, scalloped-style front seat backrest redesign. The 5-door hatchback will benefit from increased luggage space and now provides a completely flat load floor with the standard 60/40 split rear seatbacks folded.

It is now easier to load and unload heavy objects, thanks to the removal of a stepped section under the opening. The cargo area cover can now be stored under the cargo floor, as in the Forester.

Subaru has paid a great deal of attention to improving inement. Richer looking interior appointments and details abound, including soft-touch materials for the dashboard, door trim and centre console armrest.

Carrying space and utility has been improved throughout; larger door pockets can hold plastic drink bottles and large maps and numerous compartments located in and around the centre console hold all manner of personal items, such as phones, USB drives and MP3 players.

Greater comfort is assured with Subaru Imprezas new front seats with their higher seatbacks, increased lumbar support and cushions that more effectively distribute pressure. As in the 2010 Legacy, the seats are optimized for a rear-end collision. A tilt/telescoping steering wheel is standard on all 2012 Subaru Impreza models.

High levels of standard equipment
Levels of standard equipment have been increased across the range. All models are set to feature electric windows and mirrors, a 60/40-split fold-down rear seat, outside temperature gauge, a multi-function display, engine immobilizer, and tilt/telescopic steering wheel. .

Higher spec models will add more kit including 16 or 17 inch alloy wheels, steering wheel audio and Bluetooth® controls, heated front seats and mirrors, climate control, upgraded instruments and auto lights. Subaru Imprezas new optional navigation system includes a 6.1-inch touch screen LCD display with voice control.

All new gearbox and Boxer engine
UK versions of the Subaru Impreza will be powered by an all new 4-cylinder 1.6 litre Boxer petrol engine and will be available with either a new five-speed manual transmission or Subarus Lineartronic CVT. With either transmission choice, the 2012 Impreza delivers significantly improved fuel economy over the car it replaces.

Subaru has further ined its CVT so that for the new Subaru Impreza a lighter and more compact unit delivers smooth, linear acceleration, closer to a conventional automatic transmission while still delivering the efficiency benefits of a CVT. Higher specification Subaru Impreza models will feature CVT with a 6-speed manual, operated by steering wheel paddle shifters.

New Subaru Impreza will benefit from improved ride and handling courtesy of strengthened suspension components in front and rear and new hydraulic engine mounts to damp out vibration. The new model keeps its double-wishbone rear suspension which now features new components to improve ride quality and stability. A stiffer body structure, when combined with the new suspension, have also reduced levels of noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH).

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive: key to Subarus Brand identity
Subaru will offer two different Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive systems in the new Subaru Impreza. In models equipped with the five-speed manual, the Continuous AWD system uses a viscous-coupling to distribute power 50/50 front to rear, while any slippage will send more power to the opposite set.

Subaru Impreza models equipped with the Lineartronic CVT feature the Active Torque Split AWD version that uses a continuously variable transfer clutch to actively control power distribution in response to driving conditions.

Complementing the safety benefits of the AWD system, the new Subaru Impreza will also come as standard with Subarus Vehicle Dynamics Control (SVDC) - a system which combines stability and traction control functions - while all models are equipped with ABS, Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and the Brake Assist safety system.

Subarus high performance WRX STI, which was launched in Autumn 2011 and is now sold and marketed as a stand-alone model, is not affected in any way by the introduction of a new Subaru Impreza 5-door.

Review 2012 BMW 328i

The BMW 3-series. She is the Gold Standard. The sport sedan against which all others are judged against. The rules of entry level sport sedans are written by BMW, and even its competitors concede to that fact. And when a new 3-series arrives, well, it is big news. And for 2012, a new 3-series four door sedan has arrived. The Garage had patiently waited for months to get access to this car, as we were so impressed with the last generation 335i convertible we reviewed last year.

No one denies the 3-series legacy, but as a former E30 325 owner, I was especially keen to see what BMW had cooked up. And when my red 328i was delivered to my door, it was like serendipity, as my 325i was also red, and was the car I owned when I started to date the woman who has now been my wife since 1998.

That said, upon receiving the 328i, it looked fairly large. Sleek and sophisticated without a doubt, but the compact style of prior 3-series seems to have been lost. Attention to detail is absolutely meticulous, and BMW ranks at the top of the stack for quality and execution. Although it appears larger than prior 3-series, the car is graceful, elegant, and sporty. I emphasize elegant, a quality prior 3-series did not really have. They do now. If I had any complaint, it is the dual kidney grille is no longer set by itself.

As you would expect, the cockpit is driver focused. The iDrive is workable, but still inferior to its premium Japanese competition for ease of use. Seats were perfectly comfortable, and easy to find a perfect driving position. Thankfully, the gauges are still clear as day, it just takes some getting used to the other tech the new 3 offers. The new 3 is not opulent, but rather adheres to the German standard of old-nothing fancy. That said, I loved the supportive seats and the simple, no nonsense interior. The quality of materials and workmanship are exceptional.

BMW has given up on its model number lecting the engine displacement under the hood, as our 328i is powered by a 2.oL turbo four rated at 240hp. Our test car was blessed with a six-speed manual, though an 8-speed automatic is an option. Ever present overseas, the new 3-series harkens the return of a four cylinder BMW to our shores. The little turbo four makes an impressive bark at start-up. The car was plenty quick merging on the highway, in passing, and was quite at home on back roads. You can still order up a six cylinder, but in the real world, the four was more than adequate. And its tough to argue with EPA fuel economy ratings of 23/34 MPG city/highway.

In the effort to preserve fuel, the 328i features stop/start technology. Meaning, you bring the car to a halt, and instead of idling, the engine shuts down, and starts up again once you depress the clutch. The trouble is, this engine, as I said, has a bark on ignition, so this is a fairly abrupt process, with plenty of noise and vibration. This is something that my passengers complained about as a real annoyance. Worse, on a blazing hot week in July, in stop and go traffic, each time the engine shut down, we lost a lot of cold air from the AC. Again, something my passengers, or myself for that matter were not happy about. The only way around the problem was to set the climate control to MAX, which kept the engine running at all times. I see the need to conserve fuel, but this system is in serious need of fine tuning. I am honestly surprised BMW rolled this technology out in its current state.

BMW still considers themselves the makers of the Ultimate Driving Machine, and I am pleased to say the 328i was a joy to drive. Handling, steering and braking were flawless and befitting the roundel on the hood. The trouble is, the competition is closing the gap, namely the Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, with the Infiniti G37 nipping at the 3s heels. Id still say the BMW is the most rewarding to drive, but the playing field is getting more level all the time.

The 2012 BMW 328i four door starts at $34,900USD. Standard equipment includes Driving Dynamics Control, iDrive, HD Radio and 17 alloys. Our test car added Melbourne Metallic red paint, Sport Line Package (includes sport steering wheel, 18 alloys, M suspension, sport seats, brushed aluminum trim), Premium Package (includes keyless entry, moonroof, auto dimming mirrors, power seats), Premium Sound Package (XM Satellite radio, Harmon Kardon audio), Technology Package (Navigation and head up display), heated seats, park distance control, xenon headlights, and BMW Assist. Including destination, our 328i had a sticker price of $50,370. Thats quite a chunk of change, and as tested, more money than a base Audi S4. At this price I was incredulous our car did not have a back-up camera.

Dont get me wrong, the new 3-series is a great sports sedan, and is likely still the best. But I never heard the Hallejuah chorus. I thought Id be hearing Carly Simon reinforce it with Nobody Does it Better from James Bond fame. Because in my lifetime Ive had many similar moments driving many BMWsbut not this one. I cant point to a specific fault. Maybe its because the competition is now catching up. BMW, the 3-series is still the best around, but your enemies are getting ever closer.
